On one of the windiest days in Nebraska was the celebration of two beautifully generous and joyful people becoming one in the sacrament of marriage.
The wedding day of Kayla and Ben was one of tears, laughter, and lots of dancing. This day made me fall in love with what I do all over again. To be in on the most intimate moments of prayer to the joy during the mass and straight-up hype of the dancing… I’m incredibly blessed to hold on to those memories for my couples through pictures. I met Kayla during our first year of summer training as FOCUS missionaries in Bismarck, ND back in 2018. We ended up serving in the same state and have stayed in touch since. When she asked me to photograph her wedding I couldn’t not say yes!!
Now let’s talk about that wind… and the temperature!!! When I booked this wedding for late April in the midwest, my mind was preparing for a gloomy and cold day. That was so not the case. The day ended up being in the upper 70’s, sunny, with winds of up to 50 mph!! At times photos seemed impossible with the wind being relentless, but that’s the thing about Ben and Kayla, they radiate peace and roll with the punches with grace. They were a dream to have as we pushed through the less-than-ideal moments of the day. You could honestly tell they knew what the day was about. When things went not as planned, they kept laughing… they kept smiling. They radiate a peace that can only come from knowing the Lord.
The day started off with a touching unplanned first look between Kayla and her dad. He was in tears almost the whole day, and my heart was moved by how much you could see his love for his daughter. Kayla and Ben didn’t want a first look, so they did a “first touch” and prayed in the beautiful Marian chapel. Then it was time to get married! The nuptial mass was one of the most beautiful I have witnessed in the epic Newman Center of UNL. Father Sasse immediately brought tears to everyone in the church as he witnessed to the faith and devotion of Kayla and Ben’s love for the Lord. He even said that Kayla and Ben truly emulate Mary and Joseph, Jesus’ parents, in how they serve and love those around them and God. Father invited those in the congregation that might be far from the Lord or jaded by the faith to “give God another chance.” It was a homily that struck you to the core. The joy continued during the reception with the best chocolate chip cookies you will ever eat, made by a friend of the bride and groom, and an insanely packed dance floor!
Ben and Kayla, I hope Hawaii is incredible! I pray that your first year of marriage is filled with the joy so evident during your wedding. You truly radiate the light of Christ, and what a power that will be for your marriage and family! Enjoy reliving your day!
